GMAIL Labs: Images and Time Zone

by Sujoy on April 13, 2009

Innovation is thy name GMail. The new features to be introduced on GMail Labs this time are Sender Time Zone and Image insert in Mail. Let’s deal with them one by one.

1. Sender Time Zone:

In a livewire world where most users are using mail 24/7 and across the world, travelling across different time zones, time zone recognition for mail will definitely make life much easier. SO, the new feature on GMail : Sender Time Zone will do exactly that. It has two features:-

a) Show if it is the sender’s office hours currently (i.e. 9 am to 6 pm in the sender’s time zone)

b) On clicking details, it will show the Sender’s Time Zone, and when the mail was sent. [ via. GMail Blog]

2. Insert Image:

Lemme begin with Yayyyyy!!!! It sounds exactly like it is. You can now insert images in the post. No workaround required. Enable in Labs (Setting–> Labs) and voila. Users who trust your content can view them straight away, else, have to use the ‘Display Images Below’ setting to display the embedded images. Easy peasy!!! [ via GMail Blog]

**10 reasons why I still Love GMail**

Today is the 5th birthday of GMail. I have been using since 2005, that’s a good 4 years of it. Yes, right from the invite only days. Those were the days, when GMail account invites were being auctioned on eBay, and if you were in the club, it was Elite. From 2004 till today, GMail has come a long way. Here is a top 10 list of what we still love about GMail, and why we keep coming back to it.

GMail Turns 5

1. The self-complete contact on the To-address list, which everyone else is now copying.

2. Fast loading Inbox, faster than the fastest inbox loader out there.

3. IMAP, POP

4. Labs for GMail- from editing Chat windows, to themes, to Color settings

5. Chat within the Inbox. Video-Chat within the Inbox..with Widescreen window.

6. Contacts-Quick edits, pictures for Contacts, and status messages.

7. Loadsa Space…yes and counting. Started with 1 gig inbox, now 7 gigs and more

8. Attachment Size. No body allows 25MB still.

9. One account, multiple uses. Picasa, Orkut, Groups, Docs, Blogger et al.

10. And finally, Labels. Multiple Labels for single mail. And totally searchable.

So, what are your top 10 reasons for loving GMail still. Are they different from mine?

Yes, this is just a Time-Waster for all who just have way too much time to watch videos in a vertically flipped window. Yeah true, that sometimes you would like to see the videos from a Danny Boyle-esque perspective and you want to flip your cameras. But for the time being, flipping of YouTube videos would have to be your solace. To do this, just add the code:&flip=1 after the video url, and voila, your entire Youtube window gets upside down, even to the text level. Have a look at the screen below.

YouTube Flip

The above video is a Jimmy Kimmel Live show video courtesy: JimmyKimmelLive  The url to this video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebQs1AxCkQo, and when it is changed to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebQs1AxCkQo&flip=1 ,  the above flipped version is shown. The position of the comments do not change; they are below the video, but the tabs for the share, playlist, flag etc are shown on the botton border of the video. Nice fun to surprise your friends. Cheers!
