House Favs

WordpressYes, I ran into troubled water yet again. My webmaster decided to shift my server to a new one, and hence had to go through the process of backing up my blogs, and getting them up again from scratch. It is indeed a pain, at least it was for me. I made a whole list of blunders and I screwed up badly. The result, my blog went offline for a whole 3 days. How frustrating it is to find your blog’s main page set to a white background displaying “Error in establishing database connection”. So this is what you should actually do when you backup your WordPress, and get ready for setting your blog on a new server.

Things to remember:

Have your wp-content folder in wordpress backed up , including your uploads, images, plugins and themes. I forgot to do it, and my last minute panic was a definite qualifier for the YouTube humor Video Awards. If you DON’t do this, what you’ll end up seeing is your lovely blog set to the default WordPress Classic theme. Trust me, it HURTS.

(I am not mentioning the other details involved with shifting of the DNS or namespaces etc. My assumption is, that you have your URL ready and directed to the server where you are about to setup your already existing blog.)

So, here we go. First, as mentioned in my previous post, have your backup database ready. Ensure that it has been properly downloaded and that the file isn’t corrupt. Try opening the SQL file in a text editor like Notepad or Wordpad and you should be able to read the contents. The SQL contains your DB Name. Remember this is the DB name which you are gonna use. The Geek Hierarchy Chart

by Sujoy on January 22, 2008

An interesting thing I came across today,(like other things on the Internet) is this comprehensive hierarchical chart enlisting the different categories in which GEEKS (probably like me) can be categorized. Most of the topics have stuff related to Japanese Anime or just Anime, and Sci-Fi fantasies and X-Men comics. The hierarchy arrow pointing downards denotes: “Consider themselves less geeky than”. The Base or the Bottom Most in the Hierarchy is Published Science Fiction/Fantasy Authors and Artists. As we go higher up in the hierarchy, the specifications get deeper and more specifically pointed towards me. Stuff, like Anime Fans who insist on Subtitles, Anime Fans who Use the Term “Japanimation”, Pokemon fans over the age Six, Comic Book fans who only read X-Men Spinoffs, et al. The highest point in the hierarchy is definitely not close to me at all, by any stretch of imagination. It reads-People who write erotic versions of Star Trek where all the characters are furries ….OMFG. For the full chart go Here.

Techkeyla–Hot in 2007

by Sujoy on January 3, 2008

hot techkeyla2007 has been a year like never before for the world of Technology and Internet, abuzz with so much to talk about, so much to debate upon, so many doubts to be clarified and so many rumors and speculations made. I was lucky enough to cover a few of these topics and hot news on my previous blog. In my three odd months of blogging for Techkeyla so far, I wrote on topics ranging from Facebook’s “is” in status message being (not) removed to Google’s Opensocial Project to Mixx to Tech rumors floating around to even some random lists generated by my alter-ego. Surprisingly enough, people dug them and even replied to me with their comments. Based on the number of comments, MyBlogLog’s record of visits for each topic, here I have compiled a top 10 list (yeah, yet another one) of the Hot Posts of Techkeyla for 2007. So, here they are:-

Cheers to the New Techkeyla

by Sujoy on January 3, 2008

First posts are always very tough to handle for me. May be it is the pressure of making the right first impression, or may be I’m taking it too seriously, as this is no longer a Blogger Blog , but a full fledged website (well at least the domain says so eh!). So anyway, it’s a new year, and a new site so let’s kick it.Oh btw, Happy New Year 2008!

techkeyla So, I’m just gonna reflect on the past few days and the sleepless nights I’ve had , since 31st December 2007 when the domain was bought till today-3rd of Jan 2008, when the first post is being posted. Special mention: I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Brajeshwar for all the help he has extended me right from buying the domain, to hosting it, to even answering my silly queries filled with ignorance.Thank you Brajeshwar. But the journey from being a Hello World page to the Page you see now hasn’t been quite smooth, thanks to me being unprepared, and of course being spoilt by the drag n drop of Blogger Template. The entire procedure has been quite a long one(longer than I expected it to be) and I still know there are certain changes more to be done here and there. But it feels so good and so right to have finally come up with Techkeyla.com and moved on from my older blog techkeyla.blogspot. And I think I’m liking it here more to have been able to play around with the separate php files for sidebars, and headers and footers, unlike Blogger’s single page template code. The posts on the previous blog are still very much there, and will remain so, until Blogger one day intends to delete them.

It also helps to have a few geeks as your pals-Thanks Ashwin, Ravindra – who have helped me with the design and testing of the Template. Yeah, but the image design, and Adsense layouts are all mine.Phew! I’ll soon put up the theme for download and you know where to get it from.So here I am, wish me luck, may Techkeyla hit it BIG. Cheers to the New Techkeyla!!!!!!!
