Chat Edit

So what’s new about this. Nothing actually, only it’s faster. GMail Blog has put up the details. But anyway, I am gonna tell you exactly the same. And may be a bit more as well. Remember the old days when a friend added you on Gtalk and his Email ID used to show on the chat panel, and you always ended up in a confusion as to who is this guy. Especially when you have friends like mine with usernames like havoccreatorxx, or headbanger_allnite, et al. And what did you do to avoid this? You went to the contact list, searched for the name, and then edited the information, and then saved it.  And come back to your inbox to what you were doing. Not any more.

All you need to do now, is to just do a mouse-over on the name/email id you want to edit on the chat panel, just click on the name when the info pops up, and you are ready to edit , on the fly. A big time-saver, ain’t it? And, oh just to make sure, it is only for the new version of the GMail (for Firefox, Flock and IE7 ie). So all you IE 6 users, (whom I prefer calling loohoo..saahaars), STAY BEHIND.

Here’s what I mean by the headline! Look at the pic below.

Gmail Blog

GMail as well as Google is for sure going through a lot of changes and has been continuously trying to improve and implement innovations in their wide range of services. This one is definitely a welcome change, which will prompt more people to read the Blog. Is it a stunt to push the Technorati Rank further? LOL. C’mon. What a week it has been for Google. First, the Opensocial Apps on Orkut, and now this. Btw, the post that’s showing on the GMail page is this . “9 Reasons to Archive“. The best reason here is no.6 which says-

6. Winning arguments
“But on May 5, 2005 at 8:43pm EDT you said….”

Fantastic post. Adios!

Tweak your Gmail with Firefox

Firefox is what I say is D-Best browser around, and it is my weapon of choice to surf through the Internet. GMail is my preferred (read only visited) mail service. And just when I thought things couldn’t be better, these guys have proved me wrong, yet again. Imagine a world where GMail and Firefox are a perfectly wed couple. Imagine no more. With the following Firefox extensions, not only your GMail experience will be enhanced by leaps and bounds, but also your entire Googling experience. This list is topped by Better Gmail ( Read the Lifehacker post on it).

What it does? All that the original designers couldn’t think of, and even much more. The addons are so functional and useful, makes me think , why weren’t they included in the official release of the New Version of GMail. For a brief preview: attachment icons, label colors, saved searches, keyboard macros and a whole lotta bunch. Here’s where you can download it.

P.S. This download is Better GMail 2 and is for the new version of GMail. For users who still prefer the older version, you can download the previous version here.

No.2 on the list is : Better GReader. (Lifehacker post here).

Language translation in Gmail and GTalk

GMail

Talk about integration. Google is bringing its translation tool into its Mail service and GTalk so says, Computerworld. There are already bots available to facilitate this service. However, there is a fair chance of the translation service being inaccurate similar to its translation tool, but while talking to a person with no common language of communication, this addition might actually help a lot in getting a fair idea of the conversation.

Google’s Matt Glotzbach said:-

What you need for real-time automated machine translation is large amounts of compute power, which we have, and large amounts of data, which we have. Imagine a system that can do on-the-fly translation of things like e-mail, documents and IM chat. That’s a feature you can see on the horizon,

There are still a lot to go for GTalk and GMail’s integrated chat as far as the features that other IM clients offer, We are yet to see a Webcam facility on GTalk, Chatrooms and of course call facility in Gmail and perhaps Skype-style phone calls in GTalk. Google is also working towards providing a cheaper solution to the present pricey options for videoconferencing. Are we looking at the dawn of a Big Goog Communication Expo soon?
