GMail Search the easy way

by Sujoy on May 7, 2008

GMail BridgeThe INBOX size is now exploding. GMail now offers almost 6.5 GB of Inbox space and well, 20 MB attachments. How cool is that!! But, I have been using GMail since, umm…end of 2004, and by now , I have almost 38% occupied. That is almost 2.6 GB. Pheww! A total of 3700 mails with no archives. I don’t know how much would the number touch once I start counting the archives as well. So, the basic problem faced by me is getting back to a mail sent to me by a friend, say ‘Mohit’ on a summer of 2005 and which had some attachment. I really don’t remember what he had on the Subject line and well, really have a faint idea that it was something good that he sent in the attachment. Perhaps a funny presentation or whatever. But how do I go about searching for it from the 3700 mails that I have. (For some that’s a very small number. I have friends who are almost touching the upperlimit with 10k mails and counting. Yes, they live on GMail). SO here’s how you search your Mails the easy way. GMail’s blog released some hack today , and I am sharing some from the treasure.

Yes, you guessed it right, Search Operators it is.

So if I’m searching a mail sent by Mohit, I would put in the search bar: from:Mohit. And if I know when he sent it, say in 2005. I could narrow down the search results by adding  in 2005. So the search query would be – from:Mohit in 2005. However if you put “in 05″, you will get results of mails sent in 2005, as well as May of any year, or the 5th of any month of any year.

For searching for mails having attachments, the search query to add is ‘has:attachments’. And like any Google search engine query, it can be appended. e.g. from:Mohit in 2005 has:attachments.

If you had labeled a mail sent by a friend, you can search by searching for,”from:mohit label:flickr” etc. The same works for Subject as well. And if you really are into finding SPECIFIC stuff, you can add conditions like from and to dates, and/or conditions etc.And yes, the Show Search options on the right of the search bar is for those who find using operators a bit on the wild side.

Happy GMailing. Adios!

Edit Contacts in GMail Chat

by Sujoy on May 1, 2008

Chat Edit

So what’s new about this. Nothing actually, only it’s faster. GMail Blog has put up the details. But anyway, I am gonna tell you exactly the same. And may be a bit more as well. Remember the old days when a friend added you on Gtalk and his Email ID used to show on the chat panel, and you always ended up in a confusion as to who is this guy. Especially when you have friends like mine with usernames like havoccreatorxx, or headbanger_allnite, et al. And what did you do to avoid this? You went to the contact list, searched for the name, and then edited the information, and then saved it.  And come back to your inbox to what you were doing. Not any more.

All you need to do now, is to just do a mouse-over on the name/email id you want to edit on the chat panel, just click on the name when the info pops up, and you are ready to edit , on the fly. A big time-saver, ain’t it? And, oh just to make sure, it is only for the new version of the GMail (for Firefox, Flock and IE7 ie). So all you IE 6 users, (whom I prefer calling loohoo..saahaars), STAY BEHIND.

GMail Blog Notifier on the GMail Homepage

by Sujoy on April 18, 2008

Here’s what I mean by the headline! Look at the pic below.

Gmail Blog

GMail as well as Google is for sure going through a lot of changes and has been continuously trying to improve and implement innovations in their wide range of services. This one is definitely a welcome change, which will prompt more people to read the Blog. Is it a stunt to push the Technorati Rank further? LOL. C’mon. What a week it has been for Google. First, the Opensocial Apps on Orkut, and now this. Btw, the post that’s showing on the GMail page is this . “9 Reasons to Archive“. The best reason here is no.6 which says-

6. Winning arguments
“But on May 5, 2005 at 8:43pm EDT you said….”

Fantastic post. Adios!

Tweak your Gmail with Firefox

by Sujoy on April 14, 2008

Firefox is what I say is D-Best browser around, and it is my weapon of choice to surf through the Internet. GMail is my preferred (read only visited) mail service. And just when I thought things couldn’t be better, these guys have proved me wrong, yet again. Imagine a world where GMail and Firefox are a perfectly wed couple. Imagine no more. With the following Firefox extensions, not only your GMail experience will be enhanced by leaps and bounds, but also your entire Googling experience. This list is topped by Better Gmail ( Read the Lifehacker post on it).

What it does? All that the original designers couldn’t think of, and even much more. The addons are so functional and useful, makes me think , why weren’t they included in the official release of the New Version of GMail. For a brief preview: attachment icons, label colors, saved searches, keyboard macros and a whole lotta bunch. Here’s where you can download it.

P.S. This download is Better GMail 2 and is for the new version of GMail. For users who still prefer the older version, you can download the previous version here.

No.2 on the list is : Better GReader. (Lifehacker post here). [Continue Reading]
