Just a couple of hours from now [ exactly at 6 pm, London time ] the WWDC 2009 keynote will be held at Moscone West, San Fransisco. Unlike previous year, and the years before, when Steve Jobs took the centrestage to unveil many a fabulous products that Apple has, this year it will Apple’s SVP for Product Marketing, Phil Schiller, who will be presenting the keynote. And by this time, since the first announcement of the dates for this year’s WWDC, the internet and the blogosphere has been buzzing around with rumors and predictions on what possible products will Apple lift the curtains from. This post covers all of them, and also gives you the essential links you will need to stay connected to this year’s WWDC. [WWDC image source: Adam Jackson's Flickr Photostream]

First up: The Liveblogs:
Yes, these are the bunch of ‘Apple Groupies’ who will be tearing off their Tees, and screaming out loud with whistles blowing et al. They will be covering the event live through their Netbooks, Macbooks etc. Here is the elite list.

**Rumors and Predictions:**

The New iPhone 3GS:
What does ‘S‘ stand for? Is it Super or could it be Speed? Does that mean better processing speed, i.e. faster processors and more RAM. Also does it mean more storage? And oh, S could also mean (more) Saleable -i.e. a budget range product with a budget range price-tag. All these rumors have been making waves since the last couple of weeks. Let’s discuss them.

Well from different sources [mentioned below] we have collected the following data that the new iPhone 3GS is going to have the following features.
..significantly faster processors, twice the RAM, and twice the storage.
..expected prices to remain the same as the current lineup: $199/299 for 16/32 GB, respectively.
..better Battery life. [via Daring Fireball] [Continue Reading]

Down USB Memory Lane

by David on March 31, 2009

I was reinstalling my sisters PC the other day and I elected to backup her data onto a USB storage pen. We opted for an 8Gb stick in PC world, and I think we paid about £12. I noticed, when the device was plugged in, that the available data size was not the full 8Gb. Obviously, this is because in the data storage industry a Kilobyte is measured as 1000bytes, not 1024, as has been the practice ever since I bought my first HDD (which was a whopping 40Mb drive!)

Size

But, when you think about it isn’t this a little short sighted considering the issue this generates as we begin to use larger and larger data sizes. For example, when this was applied to Kb and Mb the difference was far less in evidence, as we begin to use Terabytes, Petabytes and eventually Exabytes this disparity between the advertised size and the usable size also manifests itself exponentially. The end result is that my shiny new 8Gb USB memory stick has a usable capacity of only 7.59Gb    :-\

Extending this example to an 8Exabyte storage device (which had a perfect 8,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of space) the usable area would only in fact be 6.94Xb ! I think people will start to think hang on I paid for 8 and i’m now only getting only 6.9 ???

Data Size

(If you want the full excel sheet including the hidden Giga, Mega and Kilo columns please just drop me a mail)

I wonder when the Industry will adopt the true 1024 factored scaling as standard?…

Unless I am extremely tormented and harassed by an application, I tend to remain on the good side of review. But this little application install has been a nightmare. Extremely dodgy, unfriendly and useless. I am talking about the latest beta release of the Social Networking Client-8hands for Windows. It supposedly claims to integrate all your social networking needs and bring Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Blogger, WordPress, et al under one giant umbrella, conveniently operating them from one client (at least what they claim).

8hands

I got to know about this app, through DownloadSquad’s post on 8hands. First things first, the app needed some update of Microsoft .Net to be installed on my machine, and a reboot. Ok, no complaints. Once installed, the application required me to make an account to login, giving in my e-mail credentials. No activation link from email required. Ok, cool so-far. Setting up Twitter easy as it goes. Click the twitter icon, enter username and password. Done!

Facebook next. Enter user-login (email address) and password. Doesn’t accept. Tried again, doesn’t accept. Signed out of Facebook from browser, and then tried login in 8hands, doesn’t work. Tried 3 more times, whilst I was updating my frustation on Twitter via 8hands (Get my twitter feed here) . If I cannot get my facebook set-up here, what’s the damn use?

Went to Start, Programs, 8hands— No uninstall exe. Went to Ctrl-Panel, Add-Remove Programs. Found 8hands. Removed.

The other thing I noticed while I was updating Twitter through 8hands was that the messages were getting updated quite well on twitter, but there was no updates on the client itself. I could not wait for them to get updated, and hence hit the uninstall button. If anyone can set-up their Facebook account here, please let me know. Cheers and DONOT install.

P.S. The image means , 8hands doesn’t require Refresh. Yeah right!

Convert Webpage to PDF for FREE

by Sujoy on October 22, 2008

I know, I know. There are a dozens of websites offering the same service. But this one is as simple as entering the URL and hitting OK. The website is Free Online URL to PDF converter. Visit the link here.

There is NO registration required, and hence the URL converted is almost instantaneously ready to download and not e-mailed to an e-mail ID. Another great thing about the service is that there are no watermarks, or mention of the service provider. Lastly, if the website link has Advertisments from adsense etc., it removes those from the converted pdf file. So there you go. Convert your webpages to PDF for FREE!!!!
