Some really good Youtube Alternatives

by Sujoy on March 6, 2008

Video Sharing sites

Yeah we all do agree that YouTube rules. In terms of the user-base, no.of videos available, no.of videos being watched, geography, and most importantly the availability of almost anything when you search for it. It has become the video version of Wikipedia integrated with Google. But yeah, the downside is that the Video quality still sucks and the occasional downtime ( for non-US users like me) irritates me to the core. Well Stage6 is closed and so until YouTube launches its High resolution Video upload functionality, we might have to watch out for better alternatives to free Internet Video entertainment. Here are a few really GOOD ONEs. Enjoy. Not in any order whatsoever.

1.Blip.TV:- The link is http://blip.tv. The beauty here is the there is no limit to the video size for upload. It doesn’t support online video editing. One of my favorites are on Blip, and they are Goodnight Burbank. The show is also syndicated on other video sites as well, but unknowingly, I like watching it on Blip.

2.DailyMotion:-The link is http://www.dailymotion.com .Everything is similar to Youtube, only better video streaming. And uploading is a charm. [Continue Reading]

Test your Popup Blocker

by Sujoy on February 6, 2008

PopUp Tester

We all hate Popups, especially when they emerge from nowhere and contain one of the most ridiculous ads. We all use Popup blocking softwares or browsers like Mozilla which has Popup Blocking enabled. But how do we test it? Here’s a website to test the effectiveness of your Popup Blocking software/ Browser that you are using. The website is called Popup Test and contains one of the most comprehensive lists of common popup tests, including Multi-Popups, Come & Go, Timed, MouseOver and even Lesser knowns like Channel Opener and Modeless Window. I tested my Mozilla Firefox Browser 2.0.0.11 and My Flock 1.0.8 and both show similar results.

Both managed to block almost all the possible Popups given by the Popup Test. The most impressive of the lot was the ability to block the MouseOver Popup, which pops up one evrytime a mouse over event occurs over a link. However, Mozilla fails to block certain sticky popups like the Drop Down Popup. All in all, it installs my faith in Firefox.

To Do List for Setting Up your Blog

by Sujoy on January 4, 2008

just blog it The journey from being a Hello World page to the Page you see now hasn’t been quite smooth, thanks to me being unprepared, and of course being spoilt by the drag n drop of Blogger Template. So to not repeat the same mistake, here I have prepared a To-Do List to make your Blog as beautiful as mine (if you consider it to be). As in “How to go for the default page to having a fully functional Blog page”. I presume you have your domain, you’ve hosted it and got your WordPress already installed properly. In short you can see the default Hello World page on your Homepage with the Blue Header (Read the WordPress official installation page if you at all are having problems knowing how to do so, or just type your question on that blank space known as the Google Search ). Let’s take it from here then, shall we?

To-Do List for Setting Up your Blog (From Hello World to Wassup World).:-

Being unprepared is not at all an option if you want your Blog to succeed. Success here means traffic, people visiting your Blog regularly, Subscribing to your feeds, may be clicking your ads even, but above all reading your posts and commenting on them. So you do not want your blog to look like a shabby, crumpled, torn newspaper column. I have literally read almost a 100 “How To”s over the last few days, to have come up with this list . Here we go!

  1. Selecting the Right Theme:-

Unless you are a CSS wizard, this one comes directly from the huge repository of free WordPress templates available online. I chose a suitable theme from wpthemesfree.com and there is just more than one to fit your need. All you need is to look around, sit, decide and finalise on the theme and of course make your own changes to fit your purpose. Important points to be noted are whether you need a two column or a three column theme, what should be the entire theme color, and most importantly the text font size. All these small things go a long way in enhancing the user experience. Template editing is of course possible, with the usual trial and error procedure. [Continue Reading]
