Okay, I will not wrap this up in any form of introductory bullshit. Lemme get this straight and right to the point. The Apps on Orkut are ALIVE..finally. I was buzzed on my GTalk today by my friend Praxy, who told me that he noticed certain changes in Orkut, right as we were speaking. It was a bit hard to digest coz I had just logged out of my Orkut account a few hours back and I had noticed nothing. So, what was next? I logged in to find the first surprise. My account Homepage showed the following pick.

Orkut Home

Just like the introductory Facebook message which invited us to install more and more apps. Well, for me, it was high time. Remember OpenSocial Alliance had been formed and announced way back in the 1800s, I mean in November last year. And now, it’s more than 3 months over of 2008. Still, I hadn’t seen any signs of anything to do with OpenSocial out here on Orkut. (A brief tutorial for all those who do not know about Orkut. It is one of the most visited Social Networking sites by Google, on which the entire online society of India, Pakistan and Brazil resides. And that means, it has a HUGE user base. It’s true that Facebook has invaded a space which was ruled previously by MySpace, and arguably still is. But then, Orkut is HUGE in this part of the world, much like Bebo is still much larger in the UK than any other social network.) The brief ask the question addition was at best an annoying and minuscule addition which didn’t even qualify as an application. But the wait is now over. The apps are here for you , and this is where they are. The page is called the App Directory, and the list looks like the following:

The Spammer Post is removed

by Sujoy on April 11, 2008

I just don’t have the time and energy to deal with it. 6 friggin mail with threats and whatever bullshit from Canadian Courts to 10,000 Canadian dollars at stake. All for a stupid stupid spam scam.

JM has a schizophrenic Bro, SM or Brian, and wants us to believe that all the harmless spam including the Single Dad with a *wink* in the end to be  really harmless. And now that his name has become famous in the spam world, he wants to undo the harm.

I am just plain sick of it. And I have decided to remove the posts.  However, I have got hold of a blogger friend, who wants to keep the posts alive. Here are the Links.

Link 1: The story of the Single Dad

Link 2: When spammer strikes back.

Link 3: The trail of mails.

Peace.

TechmemeI really couldn’t care less. I use Techmeme to see the upcoming headlines in the world of Technology. Not to be fed to some dumb tabloid-ish ‘news’. This incident happened on the 21st of March, and it has taken me some time to write about it. It was quite disturbing that even online journalism has become prey to that damned thing called dumbing down. C’mon. What difference does it make if it was the first marriage proposal or the second or the 658th? Apparently there are discussions all across, and by that I mean respectable blogs we read – Wired and Mashable to name a few. Discussions over the authenticity of the marriage or it being just a publicity stunt, or even the authenticity of it being the very FIRST one.
TwitterFirst things first. SHUT UP. Let’s move ahead from the Twitter jungle and the low lives who feel it’s cool to propose the love of your ‘Virtual’ Life on a Social Networking Tool. Is that how Life has shaped up. Are we moving ahead in a direction where proposing via SMS would become a norm. For the non-starters, here’s what actually got delivered. For the 140 character limit, the message had to crisp, sweet and precisely accurate without omitting any necessary emotions.

The message read: “To @emilychang – After fifteen years of blissful happiness I would like to ask for your hand in marriage?”

The reply, within a minute: “@maxkiesler – yes, i do.” Of course you do.!!!!

My question is to Techmeme. Is this what is meant by Tech-headlines? Lemme try create something more explosive and probably my blog could get bloated up in terms of incoming links from Techmeme. Here’s one for starters: Techmeme bashed by Techkeyla. Please oh Please try and avoid these stupid news and let them remain buried in the world of underground blogosphere.

P.S. Do read the comments on the post on Wired.com. It’s a whole set of geeks talking of how they proposed by writing a UNIX main page so on and so forth. I predict that by the time the couple decides to split, Twitter will be acquired by either Microsoft or Google. But given, Google already own Jaiku, chances are that Microsoft might head for Twitter, or may be not.

Youtube is now More OPEN

by Sujoy on March 12, 2008

Youtube

Youtube today announced a new set of more Open API’s which will enable users to use, upload and share Youtube’s huge repository of videos from almost anywhere and everywhere. Youtube indeed is unstoppable, unputdownable and invincible when it comes to Video sharing. This is what Jim Pattersen had to say :

We try really hard to make YouTube as open as possible. Anyone can upload and view videos, which can be embedded anywhere and viewed on all kinds of different devices. And, of course, anyone can participate in our community by commenting on videos, rating them, and sharing them with friends.

Nevertheless, we worried that we weren’t open enough. So, we pulled some all-nighters and added some powerful new ways to integrate YouTube content and community into other websites, desktop applications, video games, mobile devices, televisions, cameras, and lots more.

For users, the exciting news is that they will be able to actively participate in the YouTube community from just about anywhere, including the online destinations and web communities they already love and visit regularly. For partners and developers, YouTube has grown into much more than a website. It has become an open, general purpose, video services platform, available for use by just about any third-party website, desktop application, or consumer device. We now provide a complete set of (CRUD) capabilities for uploading, managing, searching, and playing back user videos and metadata from the YouTube “cloud,” managed by us. We do all of the hard work of transcoding and hosting and streaming and thumbnailing your videos, and we provide open access to our sizable global audience, enabling you to generate traffic for your site, visibility for your brand, or support for your cause. Meanwhile, we provide full access to our substantial video library, enabling you to attract users and enhance the experience on your site. It’s all free, and it’s available to everyone, starting now.

Technically, we have introduced some new APIs. (This is just a geeky acronym for Awesomely Powerful Interactions, which is what users are now capable of performing from just about anywhere.) Building upon our existing APIs for querying the YouTube library and playing embedded YouTube videos, we have added the following new API services for external developers and partners:

  • Upload videos and video responses to YouTube
  • Add/Edit user and video metadata (titles, descriptions, ratings, comments, favorites, contacts, etc)
  • Fetch localized standard feeds (most viewed, top rated, etc.) for 18 international locales
  • Perform custom queries optimized for 18 international locales
  • Customize player UI and control video playback (pause, play, stop, etc.) through software

The number of possible new applications is endless. Electronic Arts has enabled gamers to capture videos of fantastical user-generated creatures from their upcoming game, Spore, and publish these directly into YouTube. The University of California, Berkeley is bringing free educational content to the world, enhancing their open source lecture capture and delivery system to publish videos automatically into YouTube. Animoto enables its users to create personalized, professional-quality music videos from their own photos and upload them directly to YouTube. Tivo is providing its users a rich and highly participative YouTube viewing experience on the television. For more details about the innovative ways these other partners are utilizing YouTube APIs, see our case studies.

What will you build with our new APIs? The possibilities are endless. Learn more about the exciting new features in this release from our engineers or visit Google Code to get started now. We can’t wait to see what you create.

Here’s to a new future of Video Sharing- CHEERS to YouTube.
